Wouldn’t it be great if you knew beforehand the kind of questions your interviewer will ask you? If you did, it would be a great help to acing an interview in the competitive field of UX design.
You may not know the exact questions you will be asked during the interview. However, in all likelihood, the UX designer interview questions will be about your design philosophy, your interest in design, your skills, your career path so far, and your future goals.
Here are the top four UX designer interview questions to expect.
Question 1 –
How did you get started in this career?
Answer –
Your interviewer wishes to know your interest level, passion, and skills for the job. It is best to keep the answer short without skipping out on the important details.
Let your interviewer know if you were interested in design growing up, or if you became fascinated with UX design later. Did your talent as an artist spark an interest in the field of UX design? It is also a good idea at this point to mention how your earliest UX design projects cemented your passion for the field further. Let the interviewer know that you are in this career for the long haul.
Question 2 –
Can you elaborate a little about your typical work process?
Answer –
Your interviewer here wishes to know if you ask the right questions before starting work on a project amongst other things. Some designers work well with a team; others not so much. The latter kind of work well in a remote setting or with little supervision.
It is best to respond to this question honestly as it will help you to work at your best capacity as a designer. If you are uncomfortable in a work environment, then it can be detrimental to your career.
Let them know how you approach any new design project and talk a bit about how you plan each task. Tell them about the research you do and the details you need to know before starting the actual work on a project.
Question 3 –
What is the most challenging aspect of your work?
Answer –
One of the most common UX designer interview questions (or for any job for that matter) is about challenges of the job.
Clearly, state the challenges you have faced in the job with real examples. If constantly coming up with design ideas to keep users fixated on a page has been a challenge for you then also mention how you overcome it.
Creative burnout can also be a big challenge for designers. If it is something you experience from time to time, then mention it to the interviewer depending on your comfort level with the response. However, if you do mention it then make sure to also tell them about the steps you take to feel inspired again. You can mention sources of your design inspiration such as a specific artist’s work that you admire or books that help you find your creative spark again.
Question 4 –
Why do you want to join this company?
Answer –
It is a very common interview question for almost all jobs. Base your answer on the firsthand research you do about the company and its product/service offerings. Don’t only talk about what you can do for them but also what joining the company will do for your career growth.
Here, you can talk about your special skills and talents that can be an asset to the organization. Illustrate with an example of how you can improve a particular website page for better user experience. Let them know that you are serious about taking up this job and that you have taken the time to not only research about the company but also think about ideas to improve existing designs. There are no standard answers to any of the above questions. It is best to formulate your responses based on your interests, skills, and reasons to join a specific company. You are most likely to be asked the above UX designer interview questions (or on similar lines). So, rehearsing your responses beforehand can help you ace your interview.
